Class Introduction

Posted by Andres Almonte (he/him/his) on

My name is Andres(he/him) and my major is Business Management and Administration.

After reviewing the syllabus I am nervous about having to write long essays. The reason that I am nervous about this is that I came from Xavier High School, where I had to write multiple 5-10 page papers but I was not always the best at this. Towards the end of my time there in my senior year I got a little better at writing them but I still have a lot of improving to do. I am most excited about being able to have more freedom over what I get to write as in high school there was only a handful of times where I got creative freedom. I feel like the qualities of good writing are to be clear and direct. One should not get too complex and not use an excess of large words. To be a good writer one has to be able to implement parts of themselves into their writing. It is important to write well because it can show who you are as a person and can open up different opportunities for yourself. The easiest part of writing to me is conveying my thoughts exactly as they come. What I do well with writing is being concise but that is something that I want to change. The hardest part of writing to me is having to match certain length requirements of essays. I feel like most of the time I get too straight to the point without building up to my main points. I feel like I need to work on giving a more in-depth context and setup. I expect myself to be writing emails and memos as currently as I intend to one day run a business. I want to work up to be in a leadership position and I want to always come across as respectful and clear as I can be. I feel like being an effective writer can open up doors for me and can bring me more success as it would be easier for me to network.

Mini Assignment

  • Learning how to write for diverse reasons and audiences, and improving my writing abilities in particular with essays, is something I am looking forward to after studying the syllabus. In addition, I’m apprehensive about completing the essays because I tend to get lost in my introductions and wind up repeating what I write .
  • Qualities of good writing would include precise and correct verbiage, well-crafted statements that can be explained and a strong tale that can be told. Writers should be disciplined, able to identify where they went wrong and fix it no matter how many times they have to do it, creative and open to new ideas including criticism, and patient. You become a better communicator by being able to write well. It also helps us visualize and organize our thoughts, and gives us an edge in the workplace.
  • The easier part of writing would have to be the mini summaries along with the body paragraphs and conclusions.
  • The hardest part would be finding the right evidence to match what you were saying along with doing the introduction
  •  The genres I will expect to write in my major are emails, reports, meeting agendas, inventory tracks and responses to customer complaint letters.

Class Introduction

My name is Sierra Bell (she/her) and my intended major is Psychology.

After reading and reviewing the syllabus, one thing that I am excited about is improving and expanding my writing skills. Along with being excited to start college, I am also anxious about transitioning from high school to college. With this in mind, another thing that I am anxious about is transitioning from high school English classes to college English classes. From my experience, high school English classes mainly cover literature and language with just the basics of writing while college English classes are mainly focused on writing.

When it comes to writing, everyone has different ideas of what good writing qualities are. Personally, I think one good quality of writing is development. Writing should always have some type of structure and unity to it. In order to do this, writers need to have an idea of how they are going to build and write their work. Writing is also important because it is a basic life skill. If we did not know how to write, then there would be no books and articles and without books, we would not be able to learn and comprehend things.

Personally, I do not think I am a good writer. But if there was one thing about writing that I find the easiest is it would be how I express myself. Whenever I write my papers or essays, I always try to express my opinion as best as possible or if it is a research paper, I try to express the research as much as I can. I think the hardest part of writing for me would be introductions. Introductions are what draw the readers into your work and I sometimes struggle to start my writings.

As a Psychology major who is planning on becoming an actual Psychologist I will be expected write many papers, specifically research papers. I will also be writing many patient evaluation forms. I will also be dealing with the brain and will be conducting many different research projects. Being an effective writer can affect me because if I cannot construct researches and conduct different experiments, people will not trust me to study them.

Jaline McCallum
Intended major: Psychology
Pronouns: She/her

After reviewing the syllabus, one thing I am excited about is improving my writing. I wasn’t very good in high school, so I hope to get better. One thing I’m anxious about is getting stressed out over the assignments. I think the qualities of a good writer are that the person reading the writer’s piece can understand and easily articulate what is being said. The easiest part of writings is that I can write down what comes to my head quickly. The hardest part for me is getting down what I think makes sense on paper and makes sense to the reader. For my major, which is psychology, the type of genre I would be writing is most likely psychological fiction. This type of genre allows readers to go more in-depth in the person’s mind. Becoming an effective writer will give me more opportunities in the future because I will become a more credible person.

After reviewing the syllabus, the one thing I am most excited for is the Portfolio. I love to see the progress I’ve made so to see if my writing has changed in any kind of way will be really exciting for me. Over the past few years, my writing has gotten a lot better but I feel like there is always room for improvement when it comes to it. Sometimes I can be a little repetitive while writing and I do want to learn ways I can prevent that from happening. I’m really nervous about the peer review that we have to do with the class. I was never really comfortable with sharing my work with the class and would make sure that my teachers were the only ones to see the work that I have written. I think I’m just afraid of someone judging my work right in front of me. I can write really strong body paragraphs when well prepared but struggle a lot with the introduction of papers because I don’t want to write something unnecessary or if I’m writing about a book I don’t want to spoil it for anyone. Body paragraphs on the other hand are very easy for me to write when I have the right material as well as a strong thesis. I believe that being a good writer always starts with having a good thesis statement. A good writer is also very clear with their writing unless they are purposely not trying to be. Being a good writer is really important because writing is always something that we are going to use whether it’s formally or informally. Being able to write the correct way and using the right grammar is going to be important when filling out important documents or even when writing an email to your boss. I feel like for my major I will be writing a lot of research papers about different cultures along with some history papers. If i do decided to stick to my major and get a job that is in that field I will most likely end up working for the government and my writing skills would have to be very strong in order to make sure that the things i write are correct and that there is never a misunderstanding when someone else is reading my writing.

Assignment 1

Major: Architecture

Assignment n1:

In order to be a good writer one has to understand the reason why they’re writing and the purpose of it. One doesn’t just write whatever comes to their mind, there’s a reason why they’re writing that: surroundings, problems, events it all has a meaning as well as an objective. It is important to understand these things so that one can truly express themselves to the fullest. This in my opinion is the beginning of good writing. Being able to be a good writer is fundamental, it is necessary to know how to properly write in order to accurately express your emotions, present your ideas etc.

I believe that the easiest part of writing for me is being able to connect all my thoughts and be concise with my writing. I don’t go overboard with what I write, I tend to be very direct with my essays as well as any other type of assignments.  However, something I struggled with during English class in high school was explaining my point with extra detail or using proof to further analyse what I was stating.

In addition,  I don’t think I will have to do a lot of writing in my intended major since it’s architecture. I might have to do multiple presentations, the main type of genre that I might use would be speech or do reviews about other projects.

This course can help me get better at my speech, writing skills as well as being able to piece detail together to strengthen my ideas.

Hello, my name is Arlyn Tejada, and my pronouns are she/her. My intended major that I will be studying at CCNY is English. While reading the syllabus my emotions were all over the place. I was anxious, nervous, and excited all at the same time. This class is for people who want to learn how to read and write sophisticatedly. Which I am very excited about because I know by the end of the school year. This class will have helped me clearly express my thoughts in writing. I do have nerves about this course since this is a college class which will mean the questions are more advanced and also knowing someone who has a degree in writing will be critiquing my work.

Even though there is no way to identify good writing, there are qualities that can be recognized, such as it has a central idea, it is clear, has a focus, and it will leave the readers thinking because that is what writing is all about, giving the readers something to think about, changing their perspective. Being able to write a clear statement will help communicate our thoughts and feelings. The easiest part of writing for me is coming up with what to write. I can comprehend and analyze the question. In my personal experience, the hardest part about writing is writing my thoughts and ideas onto the paper in a constructive and sophisticated way. Being an effective writer will affect my career because in my career in journalism I will be expected to be in touch with current events and write a comprehensive summary about them. When my writing isn’t clear it will be considered unreadable.

Short Essay

Posted by Kevin Henriquez (he/him) on

Hi my name is Kevin Henriquez and I go by the pronouns (he/him). I am going to be studying Psychology at CCNY. During this semester, I am very anxious about transitioning from the high school life to the college life because of how different they are. Other than that I am excited and ready to try new things in college this semester because there are certainly many things to explore.

The qualities of good writing are organization, grammar, accuracy on the topic, and supporting material. In order to be a good writer, I think that you need to know yourself as a writer so that you can understand what kind of writing styles you prefer. To add on to that, you need to be able to develop your ideas in a coherent manner. It’s important to be able to write well because it helps get ideas or points across effectively.

For me the easiest part of writing is probably spelling and organization. The struggle in my writing shows when I write transition sentences, or even when I’m being too repetitive in my writing.

In the career path that I am going down, I’m certain that I will have to use expository writing and descriptive writing. Being a good writer will definitely come in handy because employers look at that when they are scouting candidates for a job position. Not only that but it will benefit me because, being a good writer can help me communicate more effectively for whatever the case may be.

English Introduction Assignment

Starting this course I am most excited about improving my writing skills and improving my work ethic. The one thing that really makes me nervous about this course is the fact that we have to write very long papers. That only scares me because I don’t know how I can talk about something for more than 3 pages. I think the most important qualities of being a good writer is being able to tell a good story, keep a readers attention, be informative, and being able to stay on topic. I think in order to be a good writer you must fail and learn from your mistakes. You get better with criticism and by reading other writers work. Everyone should try being a good writer because its a skill that can be incorporated in everything you do in life, no matter the job. Personally the easiest part of writing for me is the writing itself. The part I struggle with the most is starting but when I get the general idea of what I want to talk about I’m able to write about it easily. During this semester my main goal is learning how I can start papers and generate better ideas. I am not completely sure what my career field will entail but for my major which is economics, writing can help me gain a deeper understanding of economics and the importance of it.
