Essay #3 Audience Strategy – Andres Almonte

Posted by Andres Almonte (he/him/his) on

My last two essays were very focused on informing readers on what climate change is and how vital is that we act now. My intended audience for this was those that do not take the issue seriously and my goal was to be sure to let them know what is to come and who would be affected if no actions are carried out.

My intended audience for my next essay I think I will overall keep the same but this time I think that I will try to more appeal to a younger audience with the age range of 15-25 as this is my generation and the one that will be able to enact change if we worked together. I want the readers to feel motivated.

I think the genre that would be the easiest and most accessible would be an informative article in a list format with headings so that the reader could find maybe an exact point that they were looking for, or get a general idea of what it is about from a quick glance.

I will try to encompass pathos, logos, and ethos. The way that I will do this is by using facts and information for Lagos, then try to use examples of who is is affected to maybe try to pull at the emotions for pathos, and finally ask the reader what would they do to try and call their ethics into play for ethos.

Essay #2 Research Proposal – Andres Almonte

What effects does climate change have on outcasts in society such as those incarcerated and those in poverty?

The reason that this has my interest is that when searching for climate change what is most likely found is stuff that is common knowledge which is why I want to write a research paper about this. In my paper, I would want to inform them about what has already happened to those in communities like the Isle de Jean Charles tribe which is one that now needs to be relocated because of climate change. I also want to make sure to show how the criminal justice system is affected by climate change. The audience for this paper should be those that are trying to understand more about how climate change affects those not often thought about.  I plan to have most of my sources found by the 22nd. The example essay that I will be using is called “Climate Change: Causes, Effects, and Solutions.”(https://spark.parkland.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1163&context=ah)  This is by a student from Parkland College in the honors program, that has a well-formatted essay in my opinion.

Topic Reflection

A social issue I want to discuss is climate change and global warming. The reason that I want to write about this is that it is an issue that is not taken seriously despite how serious it is. This is an issue that won’t majorly affect me in my lifetime but it still is something that I feel like we should work on. This is a topic that I was not that interested in until junior year of high school when I had to do a project on global warming in art class. In this assignment, I had to make a flyer on the issue of climate change and global warming. In this, the picture that I had chosen was one of what New York City would look like in a few decades. The picture had most of Manhattan underwater because the 2°C of global warming would lock in at least 20 feet of eventual sea-level rise, and an immediate transition to clean energy is needed to divert the world’s current trajectory towards a dire 4°C future. Seeing the picture of what I call home showed me truly how important it is that we work on this issue. I had done some more research and had found out the effect that global warming has on glaciers. I found out that the melting of glaciers, as well as ocean warming and expansion, lead to sea-level rise. Over the last 100 years, the global sea level has risen by about 10 to 25 cm based on analyses of tide gauge records. It is likely that much of the rise in sea level has been related to the concurrent rise in global temperature over the last 100 years. The world’s glaciers and ice caps have lost massive amounts of ice in the 20th century, with the process accelerating since 1988. All of this information that I had found out made me see that this issue is very serious, which is why I want to learn more about this topic.

Rhetorical Analysis Practice – Andres

The author of this is someone who does cinematic short films, but the words spoken in the video are of Isaac Asimov’s. Issac Asimov was an American writer and professor of biochemistry, which is the branch of science in question with chemical and physicochemical processes and substances occurring within living organisms. The last book published by Asimov was called Our Angry Earth, in which he tells us how we have to change our life, resume scientific thought experienced in pollution, and describes a plan for a more ecological, more hospitable, and healthy world. With this knowledge, the words spoken are credible and the footage that we see is put together by someone who often does this, which can be seen by their other videos.
The issue that is being tackled is climate change and how we have not as a human race been taking this issue seriously. It illustrates the fact that we ignore and add on to the issue at hand. The target audience of this is the human race, with more of a focus on people that choose to ignore the issue of climate change. The purpose of this video is to bring awareness to what has been going on and what is still going on to our climate. The central point that the author is trying to make is that change can still happen but if we do not act soon then earth as we know it will perish. The genre of this is more of a compilation to bring awareness and attempt to show us what we are killing. The author’s stance on climate change is that “ We need to actively remove carbon from the atmosphere — and do so within the next ten years or else we face irreparable damage to our atmosphere.” This is what they wrote in the description of the video.

Class Introduction

My name is Andres(he/him) and my major is Business Management and Administration.

After reviewing the syllabus I am nervous about having to write long essays. The reason that I am nervous about this is that I came from Xavier High School, where I had to write multiple 5-10 page papers but I was not always the best at this. Towards the end of my time there in my senior year I got a little better at writing them but I still have a lot of improving to do. I am most excited about being able to have more freedom over what I get to write as in high school there was only a handful of times where I got creative freedom. I feel like the qualities of good writing are to be clear and direct. One should not get too complex and not use an excess of large words. To be a good writer one has to be able to implement parts of themselves into their writing. It is important to write well because it can show who you are as a person and can open up different opportunities for yourself. The easiest part of writing to me is conveying my thoughts exactly as they come. What I do well with writing is being concise but that is something that I want to change. The hardest part of writing to me is having to match certain length requirements of essays. I feel like most of the time I get too straight to the point without building up to my main points. I feel like I need to work on giving a more in-depth context and setup. I expect myself to be writing emails and memos as currently as I intend to one day run a business. I want to work up to be in a leadership position and I want to always come across as respectful and clear as I can be. I feel like being an effective writer can open up doors for me and can bring me more success as it would be easier for me to network.
