ESSAY #3 AUDIENCE STRATEGY – Richelle Placencia

Posted by Richelle Placencia (She/they) on

My last essay was about the difficulties and factors that go into mental health and how they have impacted Generation Z. And so my intended audience is parents and also Generation Z so that they know information on how to deal with their mental health and for parents to look out for their children because it is possible for them to suffer mentally as well. The audience is from ages 13-60. I want to be able to target the people that are just learning to be a part of society and the people that have already been part of society but need to be educated more.

I think the use of poetry and political cartoons would attract my audience. The older audience would probably be more attracted to politics so if they see cartoons that convey a message they are more likely to question it which leads to a conversation being able to happen and I would like to use a comparative cartoon where it compares the cartoon from the past where people who were suffering mentally were sent to the asylum and then to a cartoon that shows people promoting mental health. I would do this with the use of logos since older people respond to logic showing the change in perspective can hopefully help them change their minds. And for generation Z since we are very into memes a political cartoon would be something that captures the mind and would push people to get help. Poetry can also be used since ethos is to appeal to people’s emotions and poetry does that best. I would pick it from a poet that is a part of Generation Z so that people can get the ideas straight from the source.

Essay#2 Research Topic – Richelle Placencia

For assignment 2 the research question that I’ve chosen is “Why has mental health worsened in teens over the past generation?”. I chose this topic because I thought everyone should know why so many teens’, including ourselves, mental health have been suffering, even pre-covid. Over our life course, there has been at least one time an adult has invalidated the way we felt by saying we were too young. But in reality, there are problems teens face in this generation that the last generation did not have to go through. The reason why I chose this topic is that this is something that’s current and is affecting everybody in the world.  Something that also interests me is learning the actual factors that contributed to the wording in mental health. I would like to know why people have let this go unnoticed.

My research sources should be done by Friday the 22nd. One of the scholarly sources that I’ve found so far, talks about the factors of why the new generation’s mental health has significantly decreased, such as social media (a given) and generational trauma. The text was also able to communicate to people some of the signs that are seen in teens who can be suffering from a mental illness. The article gave a voice to the teens that have been suffering but have not been able to communicate it. The audience of this text is to parents, specifically parents who neglect their child’s mental health.

The main audience for this essay is for adults who see their children suffering yet play it off as if it was normal or say that the child knows nothing about pain. The link to my Model Essay on the Annie Casey Foundation is: https://www.aecf.org/blog/generation-z-and-mental-health

Essay #1 Topic Reflection

The social issue I’d be speaking of is the impact of the LGBTQ+ community in the U.S. I am a part of the LGBTQ+, I am omnisexual, and have just recently come out during this year. The LGBTQ+ community struggles to this day around the world, and I want to bring awareness to what has been done about it and what has been happening. There is always a new story about somebody getting killed or somebody killing themselves due to the inability to express themselves. Homophobic people continue to apply pressure and try to take our rights away, even though we barely have any. I will never understand why other people think they have the right to put their input or try to control a part of somebody else’s life. Nonetheless, I want to continue to educate myself on the social issue at hand because although I know some of what has happened in the community, I want to learn more about the past and analyze how much has changed since then.

Dan Avery wrote, Half of LGBTQ workers have faced job discrimination, report finds”, he works for NBC News, which discussed the discrimination of LGBTQ+ workers. Some inappropriately mistreated, and no one begins to defend them. It took multiple surveys from LGBTQ+ people to see that numbers are worse than someone may think they can be. For example, “As many as 1 in 4 (25.9 percent) LGBTQ employees said they had been sexually harassed at work at some point” At no point in time should that have been able to happen. Still, due to the discrimination in the workforce, the LGBTQ+ worker gets the blame and gets let go. But now, thanks to Biden, there is the ” executive order directing any federal agency with protections against discrimination based on sex. ” This is a significant step in going in the right direction because it may start helping change the work environment and may help people start to see that there is nothing wrong with what happens in someone’s personal life. Class Introduction

My name is Richelle Placencia; my intended major is psychology. My preferred pronoun is They/She.

After reviewing the syllabus, I’m excited about this course because I feel as though I have a sense of what I expected to do. I feel like my AP Courses helped me work on the 8-12 page works. I am anxious about getting everything in on time, having to remember to check if I have any assignments, and learning how to navigate the website on time.

Some qualities of good writing are organization and strain of thought. Good writing needs a planned-out version of a text from beginning, middle, and end. To be a good writer, one must know how to activate an audience with just the words and have a reader understand what you mean and understand your view even if they disagree. Writing well will allow people to communicate in a sense where everyone can understand and be convincing enough to make people understand you differently.

The easiest part of writing would be going along with the flow of ideas. Once my mind has an idea, it continues to grow, which allows me to get lost in my writing and include a more precise understanding to support my points. Something to work on would be rereading my text. I tend to finish and not go back and make sure everything makes sense to everyone and not just to me at that moment.

I will be required to write essays explaining vocabulary words and applying them to real-life situations for my intended major. By being an influential writer, I can have a different way of viewing things and paint the picture.
