ESSAY 3: audience strategy

Posted by maithili sharma on

As we’ve seen, there are different kinds of people around us, with different mindsets; there are certain people, who are opposed to vaccination, typically people who don’t let themselves or other people they know take the vaccines. Then there are some people who don’t trust the government and believe that there might be multiple side-effects from taking these shots. The main audience for my essay 3 would be the anti-vaxxers who live in our community. The primary characteristics of the anti-vaxxers are to not take the vaccines or let anyone else take them either. The main purpose of this essay is to make the audience realize that the perspective through which they are looking at the disadvantages of the covid 19 vaccine is wrong. The vaccine actually has way too many benefits, and they can try to change their perspective, or at least stop convincing others to not take their shots. The genre that I’m considering for this essay is going to be descriptive and expository and I’m going to portray those through a poster and a meme. The poster would mainly be about supporting the vaccine, and the meme would portray the thought process of anti-vaxxers, through a simple meme that both gen Zs and boomers would get. The main rhetorical strategy that I would direct my essay towards is Logos, as the meme and poster would lean more towards logic and reasoning than emotions. I am choosing this category, as most of us are familiar with them, and see them almost every day, it could be on social media or maybe a poster on the subway, train, etc. I am really looking forward to seeing how this essay turns out.

Research Question-Maithili Sharma

For assignment 2 the research question that I’ve chosen is ” why aren’t the unvaccinated getting their shots?”. I chose this topic as I found it pretty interesting, and I thought all of us should know why we’re still wearing masks and maintaining social distancing even though we’ve been vaccinated for months. I know that it’s every individual’s own personal choice whether they want to get vaccinated or not, and forcing them to get a shot goes against basic human rights, but still, I feel they should look at the disadvantages from our perspective too. The reason why I chose this topic is that this is something that’s current and is affecting everybody in the world.  Something that also interests me is knowing the point of view of these people. I would want to know what scares them about getting vaccinated.

One of the scholarly sources that I’ve found so far, talks about how brazil made covid 19 vaccination mandatory and part of their law too.in this topic, Mandatory vaccination for COVID-19 has been the object of heated debate in Brazil. This article discusses the legality and constitutionality of such a policy. First, it analyzes the laws, regulations, and Supreme Court decisions that provide for the possibility of mandatory COVID-19 vaccination. Subsequently, it analyzes the constitutionality of a mandatory vaccination policy through the proportionality method to address the conflict between, on one side, the right to individual autonomy, which includes the right to refuse medical intervention, and, on the other, health policies that interfere with individual autonomy to protect the rights to life and health. The application of this method allows for the identification of key questions that need to be answered to determine the constitutionality of a mandatory vaccination program. So far this is the only source I’ve found, but I’ll find all the sources by 10/22. The one source that I’m really looking forward to researching, is the one where we’re supposed to show the problem from the opposite perspective, so right now I’m searching for articles by people who support not getting their shots.

The main audience for this essay is definitely the people who voluntarily chose not to get their shots, besides them there are the people who support not getting vaccinated. The publication for whom I think my essay would be appropriate would be ‘CNN’. and I’ve provided a link to a model essay from CNN, that relates to my topic. This article by Miguel Marquez talks about how the once vaccine-hesitant are changing their minds.

Topic Reflection for Essay 1-Maithili Sharma

Posted by maithili sharma on

Ever since I’ve moved to new york, I’ve seen a lot of things, some things that have amazed me and some things that have shocked me. New York is a beautiful city when one looks at it from the outside, but as we go deeper, we can see the people around us and how loud, crowded and dangerous the city is. But this is what I think so far because I still haven’t gotten a chance to know the city that well. The one thing that I’ve noticed a lot amongst this chaos was the homeless people around me. The weird thing about this was, that some of them looked homeless, but didn’t act like they were, or maybe some acted like they were homeless but didn’t look like one. I remember walking down 8th avenue and seeing a bunch of people just sleeping on the sides of the road, some were near times square, and all I could think about is, “why don’t they just get jobs?”. I found that very interesting because these people looked intelligent, they were smart enough to make a tiny tent for themselves in the corner of a block. It was clear that they could read and write, as they had signboards next to them. I even think I saw a lady with a laptop under all her clothes. that’s when it struck me, that some of these people are just here, because bankruptcy led them there, and now that they don’t have a place to live they can’t do simple things like sending out job applications, because you obviously need a mailing address and a mailbox for that. Many employers wouldn’t even consider homeless people for job openings. they have the same misconceptions about them as everyone else does. Addiction may play a part here, most people think that addiction prevents homeless people from looking for work. Not all homeless people are addicted to drugs, but most people think that they are, including employers. Most people think this is the major reason homeless people don’t get jobs, and it may be true for many chronically homeless people. I think the main context about this topic is homelessness in general, and the exigence would be why can’t they get jobs. The main audience who are most likely to react to this analysis would be the employers, who choose not to hire these people for jobs. and I am looking forward to getting to know more about this topic.

Rhetorical Analysis- Maithili Sharma

“The impact of vaccination on the health of the world’s peoples is hard to exaggerate. Except for safe water, no other modality has had such a major effect on mortality reduction and population growth” (Plotkin and Mortimer, 1988)

As it is pretty clear in the picture given above that the author of the text on the cardboard, isn’t visible, and is one of the protestors for the anti-vaxxers for the Covid 19 virus. Therefore, it is obvious that the author isn’t credible. From the text provided above, I can assume that the author may not know enough about the field of science and doesn’t know how the human body functions, therefore don’t know the importance of vaccines. Although there is nothing that I can be certain about. The sign that they are holding up says, “We don’t need no vaccination, We don’t need no forced control”. The author/protestor is representing the issue about how the US government has made vaccination mandatory for all citizens for traveling, going out, and seeking education and they are protesting against it. This is the rhetorical situation described in this paragraph. The author wants to generate awareness about this issue and wants the FDA to engage in this protest. I’m addressing this issue as I want to provoke their thoughts on this problem.

The target audience for this issue is the federal government of America, as this picture was taken from the New York Times, of the protestors outside the New York City hall, therefore the protestor is a resident of the United States. They are assuming that the FDA has made it mandatory for the citizens to take the vaccine, this is not true, taking the vaccine isn’t compulsory, America is a free country, and people who haven’t taken the vaccine can still come out of their houses and move freely in public areas with or without the mask at their own risk. The main purpose of this text is that people should be allowed to go everywhere, i.e, bars, restaurants, schools, colleges, theatres, so on. and their vaccination status shouldn’t matter. They are stating this point implicitly with the help of a signboard at a protest. The central point that the author is trying to make is that, vaccinated or not, they should be free to go anywhere they want. As this picture was taken from the New York Times, its genre is somewhere between a news story and speech/debate. The author wanted their point to be firm and as it was a serious issue they chose to use a signboard that conveyed their problems in a direct form. Their attitude towards the issue could be described as anger, sorrowful, and seriousness. the tone of this message was assertive.

A vaccine activates our immune system without making us sick. Many dangerous infectious diseases can be prevented in this simple and effective way. Therefore, I don’t see anything wrong in taking them, they don’t cost you anything but your time.

Introduction- Maithili Sharma

Hello, my name is Maithili Sharma. My preferred pronouns are (she/her)and my intended major for the next five years is Architecture.

After reviewing the syllabus for this semester, the one thing I’m most excited about is having a hybrid class! besides that, I guess I’m just really looking forward to making new friends from different cultural backgrounds and gaining different perspectives. I also love to write different kinds of autobiographies, so I’m looking forward to doing that too. Getting below C is probably my worst fear, and I’m worried that I might be too hard on myself and therefore get too anxious. I don’t know a lot about the syllabus, writing essays isn’t probably something that I’d find myself so good at. I’ve written a bunch of essays in high school, but they were for exam purposes. Therefore I’m unsure if I could do most of my work before the deadlines, but eventually, I know we all would ace it.

According to me, the best quality that an author should have is being innovative, and creative, they should keep the readers interested in what it is they’re writing about. they should have the readers think things like “oh? then what happened”, “why did he do that?!”, ” I’ll just read for 5 more minutes”. To maintain good writing, the author must have a really good vocabulary, using different adjectives to spice up certain stories and making them even juicier is something that every reader expects from them. having such qualities are important to maintain good writing skills.

The body of an essay is the easiest for me, I love to fanaticize various things, imagine myself in a different reality, I usually spend most of my time thinking from different perspectives, and it doesn’t always have to be people’s minds, sometimes it could be a bottle or a marker or my phone, its usually my phone. That’s something that I find myself being good at. The hardest part for me would probably be the introduction or maybe the conclusion, or I guess it’s both. I am looking forward to learning to write a smooth entry and exit in an essay, that’s something I’m gonna have to work on.

As a future architect, most of my writing work would be articles or thesis. I could imagine myself describing the interior of someone’s mansion in an article in the architectural digest. that’s always been my dream. besides that, there are various furniture pieces in magazines that usually have a short description of them in fancy words, which makes the buyer fall in love with them. Also, there may be times, where I might have to explain a certain house or a model to a client through words, and not the model itself, that’s where my writing skills would come. Hence, being an effective writer could help my career in many ways.

Thank you 🙂
