Romeo Hu’s Rhetorical Analysis
In Chella Man’s film, Chella Man used his knowledge to educate himself and others using his platform to demonstrate the history of Stonewall in one of his YouTube videos “Stonewall Forever”. Based on Man’s background, Chella Man is an LGBTQ+ activist and artist. Known for sharing his experiences and knowledge as a gender queer/non binary and transgender.
The issue Man is responding to is stereotypes and discrimination towards the LGBTQ+ community, more specifically, the transgender community. Fifty-One years ago, on June 28 1969, police officers attacked Stonewall Inn, a queer bar in Greenwich Village. During this time, discrimination, stereotypes and Public Morals Divisions was a regular occurrence. Cops had the ability to abuse and arrest as well as use violence towards queer individuals. However, on the night of June 28 1969, the LGBTQ+ community fought back. Chella Man highlights the history of stone wall in his film, therefore, acknowledges thee past and present activists as well as the movements for LGBTQ+ equality before and after.
For this film, the target audience is the LGBTQ+ community and the ones that are allies with the LGBTQ+ community. More importantly, those who are against the LGBTQ+ community. After viewing Chella Man’s film, those who do not support can hopefully change their perspectives and instead also become an ally. The author most likely assumes that his audience are here to educate themselves and look deeper into history to get a better understanding of Stonewall as well as the LGBTQ+ community. To add on, their own identity.
The purpose of this film is to use this platform to spread awareness and bring people together. Acknowledging that even after many years, activist such as Chella Man, are still fighting for LGBTQ+ equality; also using knowledge to further expand more voices ad supporters. The genre of this film is documentary because of how many important information are provided to the audience. The stance the author have towards this subject is thoughtful and serious. Chella Man’s tone demonstrates a more powerful voice throughout his film.
