Police Brutality in New York City and its effects on New Yorkers by: Enrique Cortes 9/14/2020
Police brutality is not something new and something that just happened over night it is something that has been cultivated through many years of racism and discrimination that the United States and many countries have done. Racism stems from slavery and this action is something that most countries want to forget but there are cracks in their cover up and there are people who still believe in this horrendous act that not only destroyed many generations of people but is clearly a violation of human rights, yet in our modern society we still have this problem 115 years after it was abolished. Since slavery was abolished by the 13th amendment in 1865 then that means that many people needed a way of still being in control so that’s how racial conflict happened and was born after the abolishment of slavery. The authors of the text being used are Jeffery c. Mays and Ashley Southall, the authors seem credible because their article is recent and was published on March 25,2021 and was updated on July 28, 2021, furthermore in the article there are sentences that are links to information or even words that the reader might not know. Also, they are journalist from the New York times, and they are a news article company, so they have a credible reputation when it comes to news. The authors are responding to police brutality and how New Yorkers who are victims of police brutality or racial profiling can defend themselves and punish police officers who have abused their power. The reason I know that this is the case is because the entire article speaks about how the police have Immunity to protect themselves but thanks to the George Floyd justice in policing act it allows citizens who were victims of police brutality to sue the police officers. The audience of the text are people who have been victims of police brutality of for those who were not informed about the situation and those who live in places where police brutality occurs. I know this because the whole text is about how civilians can sue police officers for misconduct and how New York is trying to find a way to resolve the situation, the genre of the article is informative and its journalism because the whole purpose of the text is to inform and report what is happening. The authors use images and other links to further inform us how serious this discussion is and how important it is to listen and do something about it its effective because the picture shows that even in a pandemic people are risking their health to have this problem heard.
